Education

People in Clayton and Johnston County have achieved higher education levels than those in the state. The educational attainment statistics for Clayton are dramatic. Each college education level saw an increase and the number of residents holding a bachelor’s degree more than doubled in the decade. Johnston County saw the same increase in educational attainment, but the improvements are more dramatic in the Town. Clayton is served by the Johnston County School System. SAT scores for the County have increased above the state average and are within 99% of the national average.

Recreation/Cultural

The Town of Clayton has a substantial and continuing commitment to all forms of Recreation: Youth and Adult, Athletic and Cultural. Also, Clayton offers a special and unique asset, The Clayton Center Performing Arts Auditorium which includes a full season of professional touring artists and a thriving community theater and musical presence.

The Town of Clayton owns and operates the Hocutt-Ellington Memorial Library, a unique community asset, in Historic Downtown Clayton. Specific information on the Hocutt-Ellington facility can be viewed under the “For Residents” section of this site.

In addition, the Clayton area is well served by private and non-profit providers of recreation including three private golf courses and non profit associations such as the Johnston United Soccer Association, Clayton Little League, and Clayton Civitan Club.

Public Safety

The Clayton Police Department is widely recognized as one of the most professional an effective law enforcement agencies in North Carolina. Similarly, the Clayton Fire Department has state of the art facilities and equipment and is staffed by well trained and motivated members and career firefighters. Citizens of Clayton enjoy reductions on their fire insurance premiums due to the excellent ISO rating of 5.
