Here's a message about what's ahead from Parks & Recreation Director Larry Bailey:

Fall is for exploring our parks and enjoying the colorful foliage along our greenways. The Clayton River Walk on the Neuse is an easy hike or bike-ride along the Neuse River and connects to the Raleigh Greenway System. This greenway also connects to our Sam’s Branch greenway. Construction is set to begin soon to extend that trail up to Legend and Municipal Parks, allowing for much easier access to Downtown Clayton, plus two more trailhead parking areas. The Community Park Greenway connects our Community Center to Downtown Clayton and doesn’t require you to cross over busy U.S. 70.

We’re excited to see the completion of the Disc Golf Course at East Clayton Community Park! The course is very scenic with rolling terrain and rock outcrops. There are beginner and advanced tee boxes. Come check out some discs at the Community Center. Watch for announcements of clinics and tournaments. Special thanks Bobby Henn, Robert Leonard and the many volunteers who helped develop the course.

New exercise, art, and pottery classes are continuously running at the Community Center. Our elevated walking track is open all day and available on the days when the weather doesn’t cooperate. Our Community Garden always needs volunteers and new garden classes are held throughout the year. These classes, taught by the Johnston County Master Gardeners, are a great way to learn how to grow fresh vegetables year round.

I also want to inform you that this will be my last “Message” as your Parks and Recreation Director. I’m retiring September 1 and it’s difficult for me to express how much I appreciated the opportunity to be part of this department for the past 33 years. It’s been an honor and privilege to serve this community and be part of the challenges of our Clayton’s growth.

We always strive to serve all segments of the population with diverse programs and facilities and we would not be where we are without the support of the past and present Town Councils and Administration, who understand how parks and recreation improves your quality of your life.

We have an extremely creative and hard-working staff who take pride in our parks, programs, and special events. Thanks to all of the many participants I’ve gotten to know over the years. Special thanks to all of you who stepped up to volunteer and coach the many youth sports teams we hosted.

I sincerely appreciate all of your support! I know the department and facilities will continue to improve, grow and keep Clayton as “The Premier Community for Active Families.”
