Welcome the Town of Clayton, North Carolina

We're switching service providers July 1, 2017!

Meet our new garbage guy! Tommy "Trash" and his team at All Star will collect your garbage, recycling, yard waste & bulk items
Learn more about his services here.
There's no change in cost to our residents!

All Star will drop off brand new garbage & recycling carts the week of June 12-23! DO NOT put these new carts to the curb for pick up until the week of July 3!

You MUST use your Waste Management carts until the final week of June. Waste Management will NOT service All Star carts.  Waste Management will be coming on your final June garbage and recycling days, emptying your carts and then hauling its carts away.

Service with All Star will begin the week of July 4th!
Click here for more details about how that will work.

  • The price
  • Your garbage day!
  • All garbage and recycling must fit inside your cart - we still are trying to avoid overflowing carts.
  • You MUST put out your cart the NIGHT before your pick-up day. All Star will start no earlier than 7 a.m., but as they transition to serving Clayton, we cannot predict what exact time each day they will arrive. It will always vary, so to be safe ALWAYS put your carts out the NIGHT BEFORE!
  • NO PLASTIC BAGS in recycling!
  • The rules for what you can and cannot recycle and throw out are staying the same. Your garbage will still go to the Johnston County landfill, and your recycling will go to the Sonoco Materials Recycling Facility in Raleigh. Sonoco’s rules on what we can deliver to them are staying the same. In addition to the materials listed by Sonoco, you can also recycle glass of all kinds.
  • Yard waste rules are staying the same, and we will review these with All Star once they have some experience serving Clayton. However, yard waste must be bagged in CLEAR plastic bags so drivers can tell it apart from bulky items, which will now be collected each week.

  • You won't call the Town of Clayton for service issues, such as missed pick-ups or broken carts - you'll call Tommy Trash & his All Star staff!

at 919-989-1562

  • Now everything (garbage, recycling, yard waste & bulk items) will ALL be picked up WEEKLY on the SAME DAY!
  • Help All Star be more efficient - PLEASE ONLY roll out your recycling cart when it's more than half-full! Pick-up is EVERY week now!

WHAT CAN I RECYCLE? All paper (except carbon paper), cardboard (broken down, please), milk jugs, juice cartons, plastic bottles, detergent bottles, yogurt/ butter tubs, aluminum cans, soup cans, phone books and paperback books, all glass

When Is Pick-Up Day?

Want to know when weekly garbage pick-up is? Wondering if this is recycling week? When is yard waste day? CLICK HERE for the COLLECTION SCHEDULE THROUGH JUNE 30. Look for your street name!

Here's the schedule that will begin July 1 when the Town transitions to All Star. Beginning July 1, your garbage, recycling and yard waste will be collected weekly on the same day. How convenient!

Remember recycling is every other week until the end of June (Starting July 3rd, All-Star will be collection recycling EVERY single week). Until July, check the red/blue color calendar on the last page to see which week is your recycle week. These schedules are subject to change due to delays from bad weather, unusually large volumes of trash or landfill closures. We make every effort to notify you in advance of any changes. But generally…if our crews or our contractor, Waste Management, don't come on your scheduled collection day, please call our operations department to report this.

What Can I Recycle?

Almost anything!  Check out this website to learn more about what can and can't be recycled in Clayton.

Please DO NOT PUT PLASTIC BAGS in your recycling cart! Throw everything in loose - bottles, can, paper - as long as it's dry and fairly clean - it can all be sorted at the plant.  But plastic grocery bags can clog the sorting machines, so KEEP OUT PLASTIC BAGS!

Interested in recycling electronics?  There are more options in our area than you think.  By law, you are not allowed to throw electronics in the garbage. Check out your alternatives to clear out the clutter!

Weekly Leaves & Limbs

Leaves, grass clippings, and yard trimmings:  You can bag these year-round and they're picked up every week on your yard waste day.  Or you can place them in containers (no greater than 50 gallons please!). Do not mix in with limbs or sticks - it's a violation and will result in NON-pick-up.

Limbs: Every residence is entitled to one 6’ x 6’ x 3’ pile of yard waste EVERY week.  That's 6-ft deep from the curb, 6-ft wide and 3-ft high. You can have several small piles, but your piles IN TOTAL must not be larger than the allowed 6' X 6' X 3' dimensions.

In the past, if you put out more limbs than were allowed, Waste Management would pick up the allowed amount and leave the rest to be picked up at a later date. That practice is ending because it often meant limbs would sit for weeks at the curb, generating lots of neighbor complaints.

Limbs are not picked up by a giant machine with a claw - they're picked up by a person with their hands. That job is almost impossible when your piles are a massive, tangled mess.  Please follow these regulations when placing out your limbs and try to picture whether a human being could actually pick them up and get them into the back of a truck.  Limbs have to be cut a specific size and piles also need to be kept a specific size!

  • Limbs up to 4” in diameter can't be longer than 6 feet.
  • Limbs wider than 4” in diameter need to be cut into lengths of 2 feet or less.
  • Limbs greater than 10” in diameter will not be collected.
  • A pile of correctly cut limbs should be no more than 6-ft deep from the curb, 6-ft wide and 3-ft high. That's approximately 4 cubic yards picked up every week.  If you have multiple piles, the volume of ALL piles can not TOTAL more than the allowed 6X6X3 dimensions. In other words - we allow customers to create multiple piles if that's convenient for them, but if you were to throw all those piles together in one big pile - that pile can not exceed 6X6X3 or roughly 4 cubic yards.
  • If you have more limbs out than the dimensions above, NONE of it will be collected—you MUST schedule a Special Pick-Up, which comes with a fee! If you do not schedule a Special Pick-Up, you will be considered to be in violation of Town code and will receive a warning or citation from our Code Enforcement Officer with a deadline to comply.  If you do not comply by the deadline, the Town will pick up everything and charge you the total cost of the special pick-up.
  • Avoid the fee by simply placing the allowed amount of limbs at the curb over the course of a few weeks.

If you have questions or need to schedule a special pick-up, please call 919-553-1530.

Seasonal Loose Leaf Pickup (October 1st –January 31st)

Between October 1st and January 31st, the Town performs curbside vacuum collection of loose leaves. This service is provided the next business day following your regularly scheduled trash day.  If your trash service day is Monday, leaves will be collected on Tuesday; those with trash service on Friday will have leaves removed on Monday.  During the peak season there may be times the volume of leaves is SO great or the leaves are SO wet that this schedule may be off by a day or two. Leaves only!  Please make sure your piles are free of rocks, sticks, dirt and debris.  These can clog up the machines, cause damage and delay this great service!  Leaves should be placed behind the curb, not in the gutter or in the drainage ditch.  You also have the option to bag your leaves or place them in a cart (no bigger than 50 gallons please!) and they’ll be picked up on your regular yard waste day ALL YEAR LONG.

Large Item Pick-ups

You will need to call to request a special pick-up for items such as larger amounts of yard waste, furniture, appliances (white goods), tires, etc.  Pick-up is always on a Friday. The fee will be charged to your utility bill based on the type of material.  Click here to see the fees for Large Item Pick-Ups. Please call us at  919-553-1530 by Thursday 4:00 PM and place your items at your curb on Thursday night.

Christmas Tree Pick-Up

Yes, we pick them up! They are picked up on your regular yard waste day.  Just place them at the edge of your yard, not in the curb, and PLEASE make sure you’ve removed all lights, ornaments and other decorations first!
