The Town of Clayton Public Art Advisory Board in Clayton, NC is launching a “Before I Die…” expression wall project that will be unveiled at Clayton Visual Arts Inc’s Millstock Art & Music Festival on Saturday, June 6, 2015 at 11:45 AM at Horne Square in Downtown Clayton.
“Before I Die” is an interactive public art project that invites people to share their personal life aspirations in a public space. We want people of all ages to grab a piece of chalk and write, for instance, “Before I die…I want to make a change - even if it's a little one!”
The original wall was created in 2011 by artist Candy Chang on an abandoned house in New Orleans, with chalkboard paint and the simple stenciled sentence, “Before I die I want to _____.” Within a day of the wall going up, it was covered in colorful chalk dreams as neighbors stopped and reflected on their lives. Since then, more 550 Before I Die walls have been created in 73 countries and 36 languages around the globe.
Thanks to Lowe’s Home Improvement, Guy Lee Building Materials, Hudson’s’ Hardware, Sherwin-William, Bob Satterfield, Signage of the Carolinas, Blackley’s Printing and Clark Hipolito for donating the wood, paint, PR Sign and hardware and headline stencils to create the wall.
Thanks to Jason Hardy, President of Public Art Board, Kathleen Nobles, Chairman, Stacy Beard, Frank Dziepak, Clark Hipolito, John McFadden and Sara Perricone and our volunteers for donating their time and effort to create the wall. Also special thanks to Rob Baker of A&E Trophy and Karel Lloyd of Clayton Chiropractic who saw Jason, Sara, Kathleen and Clark sweating in Horne Square as they tried to assemble the wall and jumped in to lend a hand!!
