Final Phase of Street Work Underway
Phase 3 of the town's massive street improvement program, which includes replacing aging water and sewer lines where needed is underway.
Streets slated for work include East Joyner Street, Durham Street, Parrish Street, Hobbs Street and John Street, which will get an extensive rebuilding. Several of the streets will also be getting new sidewalks.
"Once work in this final phase is completed, the town will have made a $4.3 million investment in better infrastructure and streets over the last few years," said Mayor Jody McLeod. "It's been a long process that has inconvenienced many residents along the way, but all you had to do was drive our streets to know that it needed to be done. We're excited to be making improvements that will benefit everyone for years to come."
The work, mostly financed through the 2008 bond issue approved by voters that also provided funds for park expansion and improvement, will be handled by the Fred Smith Company. The $1.2 million price tag is much less than original estimates.
Phase 3 work is expected to be completed before the end of the year.
