Lenetta Lucas Highlighted During WIC Week

NC 811 is proud to share the story of Lenetta Lucas in celebration of Women in Construction Week.

In 2019 Lenetta Lucas lost her job, and her home and was unemployed for two years. She faced one of the toughest challenges in her life, but it led her to a career in the construction industry.

Lenetta grew up in a family that worked in construction and learned the basics of concrete, footings, and brickwork at a young age.

While searching for a job, she came across an Indeed posting for a Utility Locator. She was interviewed and hired and began training for the role.

Lucas shares that working and being scrutinized as a female in a male-dominated industry is the biggest challenge she faces as a Utility Locator.

Lucas stated, “my supervisor at the time did not think I could do this, but I kept saying to myself, I can do this”.

Her persistence paid off as Lucas became a valuable employee for USIC (US Infrastructure Company) by locating buried underground utility lines. While an employee at USIC, Lenetta received an award for no damages to utility lines.

Lenetta's desire for growth led her to the Town of Clayton, where she currently works as the Town's Utility Locator.

Her passion pushes her to pursue professional development and continue advancing her expertise within her field. Lenetta also seeks out updated equipment so she can successfully and efficiently do her job.

In five years, Lenetta aspires to work as a supervisor over locates.

Lenetta has a contagious smile that she shares without hesitation. She enjoys her job and is thankful for the many people who have helped her throughout her career.

Lenetta recognizes Mack Keen, Electric Superintendent for the Town of Clayton, and Allen Turnage, Director of Electric for the Town of Clayton, and thanks them for believing in her and supporting her as a woman in construction.

The Town of Clayton says thank you to Lenetta and all women who work tirelessly to make this a great industry.

WIC (Women in Construction Week), March 5-11, celebrates women in the construction industry. NAWIC (National Association of Women in Construction) launched WIC Week 25 years ago. This year, WIC Week celebrates its anniversary with the theme "Many Paths. One Mission," which speaks to the goal of bringing more women to the construction industry at all levels.
